Once choreographers and dance makers bring their ideas to life and onto a stage, they often come to a realization that there are more steps to take in order to maintain the momentum of their project.
Join New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) for “Demystifying Dance Making - From the Studio to the Stage!,” designed for choreographers and dance makers from emerging to established.
In this event, Founder and Artistic Director of RudduR Dance and NYFA Board member Christopher Rudd will lead a conversation with established choreographers Stefanie Batten Bland and Andrea Miller to discuss how to locate opportunities to sustain one’s practice (ex. fellowships, residencies, and commissions), various marketing tactics, and the importance of networking and how to network, along with tips for bringing your project to diverse platforms and audiences. There will be time for Q&A towards the end of the event.

Christopher Rudd
Christopher Rudd (CBA ’23) is a Jamaican-born dancemaker whose work is informed by his experience as a queer Black man in dance and transverses ballet, contemporary, and circus arts. He is a 2019 Guggenheim Choreography Fellow, the inaugural New Victory LabWorks Launch Artist, the creator of the groundbreaking works TOUCHÉ and LIFTED for American Ballet Theatre, a recent resident artist for both BAM and Chelsea Factory; he was named one of 2023’s 6 to watch by American Theater Magazine. In hopes of bettering the world through dance, his works blend contemporary dance, contemporary circus, and theatricality to speak to relevant issues. As founder of RudduR Dance, he is a two-time Exchange Alumni through the US State Department, having presented his works in the United States, Canada, France, Trinidad & Tobago, Burkina Faso, Ecuador, and Italy. He credits the Armour Dance Theater, Dance Theater of Harlem’s Summer Intensives, and New World School of the Arts for his professional career, which includes Carolina Ballet, Les Grands Ballet Canadiens de Montréal, and Cirque Du Soleil. Rudd has created works for the Alvin Ailey School, Duke University, and UNC School of the Arts and received residencies from CUNY Dance Initiative, Vendetta Mathea’s La Manufacture, Tofte Lake Center, Kaatsbaan, and STREB.

Stefanie Batten Bland
September 2023 Dance Magazine cover artist Stefanie Batten Bland is a global maker. The child of a jazz composer/producer, father, and writer mother, she was raised in SoHo when it was led by artists. Batten Bland interrogates contemporary and historical cultural symbolism—their categories of cultural identifiers and how these identities influence human relationships.
Known for her unique visual and movement aesthetic in the immersive field, Batten Bland is the Artistic Director of the inaugural 2024 immersive theatre summer intensive, CONCRETE. She served as movement director for Eve's Song at The Public Theater and is casting and movement director for Emursive Productions, as well as their performance and identity consultant for Sleep No More.
Batten Bland has created for fashion and lifestyle partners Louis Vuitton, Van Cleef & Arpels, Hermès, and Guerlain. She has produced 14 dance cinema films shown in both domestic and international festivals.
She receives grants and awards from National Dance Project Production NDP, Creative Capital, NYSCA, Guggenheim Works In Process, Harkness Foundation, a Jerome RobbinsAward.
Batten Bland received her MFA in interdisciplinary arts from Goddard College and is currently an Assistant Professor at Montclair State University's Department of Theatre and Dance.
Andrea Miller
Andrea Miller is a choreographer, artistic director, and founder of GALLIM, an NYC-based dance company dedicated to art, education, and community building. A creator and collaborator for dance, film, fashion, and the visual arts, Miller is known for her exploration of the essential elements of human behavior and the alchemy of movement and performance. Her works are performed worldwide, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The V&A, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, The Joyce, Jacob’s Pillow, BAM, Royal Albert Hall, Sadler’s Wells, Théâtre National de Chaillot, among others. Recent commissions include English National Ballet, New York City Ballet, Martha Graham Dance Company, A.I.M. By Kyle Abraham, Rambert2, and Ailey II.
Miller is a Guggenheim, Sadler's Wells, NYCC, and Princess Grace Fellow. Her repertory, creative methodology, and dance training are taught through GALLIM’s School of Movement as well as institutions including The Juilliard School, NYU and Harvard among others.
Miller is a graduate of The Juilliard School, and serves on the board of Chelsea Factory and The Doris Humphrey Foundation.
